We often get caught up with Sturgeon around here. It's easy to see why - even after seeing so many photos of them, sturgeon are still a fascinating fish. Combination dinosaur and sport fish, they are huge, they fight huge, and they take a great photo!
However, that makes it easy to let some of the other amazing fish in our river systems slip through the cracks. This time of year, especially this year with the mild weather we've been having, is great for trout as well as sturgeon.
One of the best known rivers in our area is arguably the Vedder River. It's not really a surprise why, as it is one of the easiest to access rivers that also has great fishing opportunities for winter steelhead. I have been hearing varying reports this year, ranging from terrible fishing (and anglers who have yet to hook their first steelie of the season) right up to anglers who are having a great year (and already have several spots on their licences filled in). Either way, steelhead are a great challenge for any angler, and a beautiful chrome prize for those who succeed in landing one.
The Harrison River is another great trout option, that boasts a healthy population of cutthroat trout. Cutties are great fighters and seem to know just how to shake a hook when they want to. Like Steelhead, they can be a great challenge, but an equally great reward.
